Informed Consent Policy

The International Journal of Clinical Studies and Medical Research (IJCSMR) is committed to protecting the rights, dignity, privacy, and confidentiality of research participants. The journal follows the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and internationally accepted ethical standards for research involving human participants.

Informed Consent Requirement

Authors must obtain voluntary, written informed consent from all participants before enrolling them in research involving human subjects.

Participants should be provided with sufficient information regarding:

  • The purpose of the research.
  • Study procedures and duration.
  • Potential risks and benefits.
  • Confidentiality and data protection measures.
  • The voluntary nature of participation.
  • The right to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty.

Authors must confirm in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained from all participants prior to their inclusion in the study.

Studies Involving Minors or Incapacitated Individuals

For research involving children or individuals who are unable to provide informed consent, written consent must be obtained from a parent, legal guardian, or legally authorized representative, in accordance with applicable laws and ethical requirements.

Where appropriate, participant assent should also be obtained.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Personal information obtained during research—including information acquired through the doctor–patient relationship—must be handled with the highest level of confidentiality, professionalism, and discretion.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that:

  • Participants' privacy is fully protected.
  • Personally identifiable information is not disclosed without explicit written consent.
  • Data are anonymized or de-identified whenever possible.
  • Confidential medical records are used only for approved research purposes.
  • All applicable data protection laws and institutional policies are followed.

Publication of Identifiable Information

Any information that could directly or indirectly identify an individual—including names, initials, photographs, videos, medical images, case histories, or other identifying details—must not be published unless:

  • Publication is scientifically justified.
  • The individual (or legal representative) has provided explicit written consent for publication.
  • The manuscript clearly states that consent for publication has been obtained.

Attempts to conceal identity by masking only the eyes or using partial anonymization are generally insufficient if the individual may still be identifiable.

Case Reports and Clinical Images

Authors submitting case reports, clinical photographs, radiological images, or other patient-related materials must obtain written informed consent specifically for publication.

The Editorial Office may request copies of consent documentation during the review process. Authors should retain these records but should not submit signed consent forms unless requested to protect participant privacy.

Ethical Review

Research involving human participants must receive prior approval from an appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB), Ethics Committee, or equivalent authority.

The manuscript should include:

  • The name of the approving ethics committee.
  • Approval number or reference, where applicable.
  • A statement confirming that informed consent was obtained.

Editorial Assessment

During editorial evaluation, IJCSMR may request:

  • Ethics approval documentation.
  • Clarification regarding informed consent procedures.
  • Confirmation of consent for publication of identifiable information.
  • Additional information relating to participant privacy and confidentiality.

Failure to provide satisfactory documentation may result in rejection of the manuscript.

Non-Compliance

Failure to obtain appropriate informed consent or to adequately protect participant confidentiality may constitute research misconduct.

In accordance with COPE guidance and ICMJE Recommendations, the journal may:

  • Request clarification or additional documentation.
  • Suspend or terminate the editorial process.
  • Reject the manuscript.
  • Publish a correction, expression of concern, or retraction if ethical concerns are identified after publication.

Commitment to Ethical Research

IJCSMR is committed to safeguarding the rights, dignity, privacy, and confidentiality of all research participants. Authors are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards when collecting, handling, storing, and publishing participant data, ensuring that all human subject research is conducted responsibly, ethically, and in full compliance with international publication and research ethics standards.
